Dam Good Rivers
No last minute trip cancellations, consistent river levels, and predictable water flow are just a few of the many things we love about the Nantahala and Ocoee Rivers. Both of these rivers are controlled by dams so they can constantly offer incredible whitewater rafting experiences to people from across the nation and all over the globe.
Oftentimes, other rivers that are not dam controlled have issues with too little water or too much water and rafting trips have to be canceled and postponed. They also tend to have shorter rafting seasons and unpredictable beginnings and endings to their rafting seasons which can make planning your summer adventures difficult and inconvenient.
The Nantahala and Ocoee Rivers have one of the longest rafting seasons in the nation! We typically begin trips on these rivers in April and don’t stop the fun until the end of September or early October. We work closely with the agencies that operate the dams that feed the Nantahala and Ocoee Rivers to match up our river trips with their scheduled water releases to ensure our guests get the best experiences possible.
The dam above the Nantahala river was completed in 1942 and the reservoir it created was useful for World War II defense efforts. Today, the dam not only provides the perfect conditions for your favorite recreational activities, but it is home to a hydroelectric power plant that supplies power to the area as well.
Above the Ocoee River lies a dam that forms the Parkville Reservoir. It was completed in 1911 and stretches 840 feet across the river. This dam is also a hydroelectric facility that was the first hydroelectric dam in the state of Tennessee and one of the first of its kind in the nation.
Both of these dams work day in and day out to provide wonderful opportunities for adventure and daily life to locals and tourists alike. Don’t wait to plan your next adventure on one of our favorite dam-controlled rivers! You can book a trip online or call our office with any questions (800) 408-7238.
