The beauty of the sky, the mountains, and the Ocoee River took my breath away. I can't describe it accurately, because I had to experience all that wonderful sensory input to really understand why it's such a popular pastime. I'm pushing 60, I've had MS for 30 years, and throw in a hip and knee replacement and hopefully you will understand that you don't have to be young and fit to give this a try. This was my third trip with them in the last several years. This trip was with my daughter that just turned 16 and she loved it. They have always been excellent and professional. Mayo was our guide and we had a blast. He literally gave my daughter the shirt off his back because she was getting chilled. I highly recommend rolling thunder river company and Mayo as a guide.Verified Unsafe and Poor raft guides My friends and I were kayaking the Ocoee on Saturday, August 31st as part of a memorial paddle for a friend that passed recently. While paddling, several of our party were put in a dangerous situation because of a Rolling Thunder guide being in a place he shouldn’t have been. The guide was side surfing the bottom pour-over of Broken Nose Rapid as dozens of people were above and about to drop in. Because of the steepness of the rapid, 2 (VERY experienced) kayakers did not see him in the hole until it was too late. Both tried to avoid hitting the raft, but wound up getting pinned against, and then under the raft resulting in two scary swims. Two more people swam afterwards, trying to avoid the situation. One of the kayakers with us yelled at the guide for being in the way and asked him to help get the boat that was going downstream, to only be told to “Back off”. The guide continued downstream without even checking on the swimmers. Our group got the people to shore, one person with blood streaming down her face- the other (a 20 year Pyranha team paddler) could barely get a breath because he was under the raft for so long. Then as one of our group was attempting to get out of his kayak to help assess the head injury, another Rolling Thunder guide crashed into him, knocking him downstream. Then, ANOTHER raft crashed into the eddy and almost knocked one of the swimmers back into the water. I, myself, raft guided around the country and the world for over 15 years and have never seen such poor boat control and common sense from commercial raft guides. It was disturbing. The Ocoee is know for being a river for rookie/inexperienced guides- everyone need a first river. This situation, however showed a company wide lack of skill that should be addressed. Rolling Thunder- teach your guides basic river etiquette, skills and common courtesy.Verified Rafting fun! We had another amazing rafting trip with this company! We never felt unsafe with the kids that were on the trip but the guides really made it special. They were all great. Liz was ours and she truly made the trip, as guides do. She was funny and energetic and kind. You can tell she loves people and her job. Thank you!Verified Great guide and great time This was our second time rafting with Rolling Thunder -we had such a fun time last year we decided to go back this year. This time we did the full river trip and had even more fun than before. The guides are knowledgeable and also friendly and funny. We always felt as if we were safe and in good hands. The rafts and equipment were clean and in good shape. The prep and safety instructions were great for beginners and those who had experience as well. The bus driver was excellent on those mountain roads. But the biggest shout out is for our guide Mayo who made the trip an awesome experience. He really knew the river. He not only made sure we were safe but went above and beyond to make sure we had a memorable time. We will definitely go back!
